New legislation coming into force from March 31st

HGVs to be fitted with compulsory blind spot mirrors

Blind spot mirrors will soon have to be fitted to all heavy goods vehicles by law.

From March 31st, new legislation will require that HGV complying to directive 2007/38/E (HGVs over 3.5 tonnes) be fitted with the mirrors said to boost the chance that cyclists are visible to drivers.

Cycling Plus campaigned through a large part of 2008 to bring the accident rate between HGVs and cyclist to the attention of the Government.

Department for Transport figures suggest that these mirrors could save many of the average 18 lives lost per year through collisions.
