GSK launch ‘human performance lab’

Glaxo Smith Kline has this week opened what it calls the Human Performance Lab – a world class science facility dedicated to understanding fuelling the body, boosting health and understanding the key to living longer.

The lab is headed up by Dr. Ken van Someren and double Olympic gold medalist Dame Kelly Holmes, who will work with partners from the world of sport, already set to including Amir Khan and the Brownlee brothers, as well as military professionals and explorers to research the limits of human performance, both body and brain.

Prior to joining GSK, van Someren was Director of Sports Science at the English Institute of Sport, leading its support for TeamGB and ParalympicsGB at London 2012. Supporting the research agenda, will be a panel of external advisors representing leaders from across the field of sports performance.

Emma Walmsley, president of GSK consumer healthcare, said “The potential of the GSK Human Performance Lab is exciting. Our elite partners will benefit from understanding what drives and improves their own performance, and the science behind their success will help us develop products that better meet the healthcare needs of all our consumers.”

Research undertaken will revolve around the science behind developing strength, stamina, cognition, hydration, metabolism and recovery. The initial studies will focus on protein, cognition and bone health.
