They'll never get into power so they can afford to be a bit more radical than the other two parties but here's how Dutch the LibDems would like us to become

Give bikers a break, says Brake

Last month, the Tories announced their pro-bike stance, now it’s the turn of the Liberal Democrats.

The party’s appropiately-named environment spokesman Tom Brake said: "Cycling is environmentally friendly, sustainable and an inexpensive mode of transport.

"Liberal Democrats will deliver the policies to quadruple cycling by 2010. We will also introduce measures to increase the number of journeys made by foot and reduce the number of short journeys made by car.

Brake said the Government had backtracked on its commitment to double the number of cycle journeys by 2002, and, were pigs to fly and Lib Dems voted into office, they would improve road safety and reduce casualties by 40% over the next 10 years.

The Lib Dems would also introduce new planning policy guidance to make development proposals take cycle routes into account, and would require larger businesses to develop green travel plans, to include targets for numbers of journeys to work on foot or by bike, and installing cycle storage and shower facilities.
