Ahead of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in November (18th to 16th) – the first major international track cycling event in the UK since London 2012 – the public are being given chance to ride a virtual lap of the new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.
The Buchanan Galleries Shopping Centre in Glasgow will tomorrow (Saturday November 3rd) see pro cyclist James McCallum set a benchmark time on a Wattbike training bike. The public will be invited to try and better the star in the 250m time trial, the equivalent of a lap around the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. The winners will win a pair of tickets to the Sunday session of racing at the Track World Cup.
The first round of tickets sold out in record time. A further 300 were released to the public yesterday. The UCI Track Cycling World Cup series will be broadcast on the BBC over the three days.
Former Commonwealth Games medallist and pro cyclist James McCallum said: “I’m delighted to play a role in engaging the people of Glasgow with the sport of track cycling as the city looks to inspire future generations to get involved with the sport. Activities such as this are a fun way to develop the fan base to educate and create an awareness of the sport."
British Cycling’s Cycle Sport and Membership director Jonny Clay added: "The overwhelming popularity of the UCI Track World Cup event is indicative of the public’s current level of interest in cycling. British Cycling is working closely with Scottish Cycling to engage the local community to educate and inspire so that we can ensure a positive cycling legacy remains.”
The site for the series – the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome – will also play host to next year’s Scottish Bike Show.
