Billed as "the helmet that gives you eyes in the back of your head", the Reevu (rear view, geddit?) helmet was featured on yesterday's Tomorrow's World on BBC1. Eyes front for ‘smart’ helmet

The system effectively ‘bends’ the light around the shape of the top of the head – all within the moulding of the helmet – to provide a clear view of the road behind.

The helmet has been produced by Durham-based Reevu Ltd. Reevu’s rear-vision system – 360˚ VuTech – has been patented worldwide.

“With the Reevu patented system, cyclists will become accustomed to use this system for safer road use,” Reevu’s Graham Steele told

The Reevu system is being introduced on cycle helmets but there are also plans to roll it out in motorcycle and snow-sports helmets.

“The revolutionary rear vision system incorporated in Reevu products is unique, and provides an exciting new innovation in the helmet market,” said Steele.

“The Reevu product is the next stage in helmet technology [and] we cannot stress strongly enough its implications in contributing to improving road safety.”

It also has potential for roadies, said Steele:

“Racers don’t have to give away their intention to make a break by turning around, they can just look at the opposition through the helmet.”

Reevu has designed two helmets, entry level and high-end. The helmets have been tested to exceed CE EN 1078 in Europe and the American CPSC standard.

Distributors overseas have already been lined up but the company is seeking UK sales agents. Sales support including merchandised packaging, posters, point of sale display units and catalogues, all of which will be available later in the year, said Steele.

The 360˚ VuTech technology has the potential to capture a huge chunk of the helmet market, said Steele, and the company has a target of captuuring at least 3 percent of the world market in helmets within two years. Steele said there were no plans to license the technology and that Reevu Ltd. would handle all manufacturing, distribution and marketing of the Reevu helmets.
