EDF's Team Green Britain is new headline sponsor for Bike Week

EDF Energy is new sponsor of Bike Week

Team Green Britain Bike Week will run from 19-27 June this year and will challenge people to rethink their everyday journeys and switch to cycling as the most convenient way to get around.

Team Green Britain, founded by EDF Energy, aims to help Britons reduce their carbon footprint by 2012 and provides advice on how to make everyday journeys as sustainable as possible.

The sponsorship will fund twelve group mentoring workshops around the UK for new and existing event organisers, a set of tailored Event Organiser Guides and increased website functionality. Team Green Britain has an existing 700,000 strong community.

Philip Darnton, Chair of Cycling England, said: "This sponsorship from a high profile brand like EDF Energy’s Team Green Britain will help further mainstream cycling and recruit more people than ever during Bike Week. We hope the extra support for event organisers will inspire more events, helping people re-discover the benefits of a healthier, more convenient, greener lifestyle."

Martin Stead, Head of Brand at EDF Energy, said: "As Britain’s largest producer of low-carbon electricity, we’re proud to be able to support Team Green Britain Bike Week, and we aim to promote cycling as an everyday healthy and practical lifestyle choice that can help the planet too.

"Team Green Britain aims to inspire the nation to work together and lower the nation’s carbon footprint by 2012. By getting back on our bikes, we can all play our part by reducing our own carbon footprints, while exercising and saving time and money too."

The mentoring workshops, which begin in early March, will provide inspiration as well as practical advice and support for everyone from existing organisers of large events to those just considering their first Dr Bike morning.

Five event organiser guides will be tailored to suit the size and type of events, including small, medium and large events plus two specifically for schools and workplaces. Each Guide is packed with ideas and inspiration for organising and promoting events with a comprehensive checklist for a smooth-running event. Plus, in a new feature for 2010, Team Green Britain event sustainability consultant, Toby Radcliffe, will provide expert advice online on how to minimise the environmental impact of your Bike Week event.

The revamped Bike Week website will feature a brand new cycle calculator for cyclists to work out everything from the amount of money they’ve saved in petrol to how much longer they’ll live if they cycle the same amount every day.

Brand new materials including posters, flyers, balloons and stickers are free to order. Competitions and prizes will once again be on offer throughout the run-up to Team Green Britain Bike Week as an added incentive for event organisers to register their events.
