EU Ministers for environment and transport will be presented with a manual of "cycling best practices" on April 14th at an official meeting in Amsterdam. The 28 ministers will be told that “cycling is for everyone” by the Dutch presidency of the EU at the kick-off event for Cycling Festival Europe 2016.
The Netherlands holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union until 30th June.
Back in January BikeBiz complained that "from the priorities given by the Presidency team don’t expect there to be any pro-cycling measures pushed through during the six months that Dutch folks will be in charge." However, the EU2016NL Twitter team told BikeBiz: "There will be a lot of cycling-related activities during #EU2016NL, more information very shortly. We’ll update you when!"
The team has now been in touch with BikeBiz to pass on the information about Cycling Festival Europe 2016.
The Dutch Presidency team said: "As a cycling nation with more bicycles than people (22.5 million to 17 million) and with cycling culture in our DNA, the Netherlands is offering a Cycling Festival to Europe, providing a stage to the growing cycling culture in European cities and countries."
This stage will be used to "increase the number of cycling kilometers with several activities organized or sponsored by the Dutch Embassies throughout capitals in EU countries in cooperation with local stakeholders," said the Dutch Presidency team.
"This can be all sorts of events such as public events to get as many people on the bicycle, or workshops to bring together local officials and stakeholders to generate ideas to better integrate bicycles into urban transportation systems."
Cycling Festival Europe has an Instagram account and its own Twitter feed.
