Cyclists have been granted greater protection from careless drivers through a new law in Illinois, US, passed this week, as reported by wsiltv.com.
Governor Pat Quinn signed legislation that will punish drivers for driving too close to cyclists and driving carelessly. The bill was one of a number recently ratified in the state intended to up safety on the roads.
Drivers intimidating cyclists by driving close or shouting threats could face a year in jail and a fine to the tune of $2,500.
Quinn signed the bill at the Campbell Street Bicycle Shop in Arlington Heights, Chicago.
He said: "And it goes whether you’re biking to work, or biking for recreation, it’s important to protect everyone, that’s what the law is all about."
‘Share the Road’ license plates are also set to be introduced, with money made from their sale being used to fund education campaigns.
