ROAM - Registered Outdoor Activity Member - is a new accreditation programme, launched today, run by Cumbria Tourist Board. The kitemark scheme will "enable visitors to make an informed choice about which activity provider they used when staying in the county." There's also a new 50-page guide to outdoor activities in the Lake District, with a section devoted to cycling.

Cumbria tourist board launches accreditation scheme for activity businesses

Visitors can turn to ROAM-registered businesses as an extra reassurance that the provider has been assessed for standards of quality and safety, says a statement from Cumbria Tourist Board.

It aims to plug the gap that currently exists whereby only those businesses dealing with under-18s have to be registered with the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA).

ROAM was launched at the OS Outdoors Show in Birmingham today.

Businesses eligible for ROAM membership include those who run MTB courses and hire bikes

Prospective members will be assessed by Malcolm Campbell, an outdoor professional who will examine what the business does and compare it to national codes of good practice.

Campbell served as the senior inspector for AALA until September last year.

“ROAM will provide assurances about the safety and quality of provision for a much wider range of businesses than are covered by current licensing regulation," said Campbell.

"The aim is to provide a single standard of good practice for the many service providers in Cumbria. This will confirm the Lake District as England’s top area for quality adventure activity holidays and provision.”

Also launched today is The Lake District Outdoors publication. This lists hundreds of the countyÂ’s outdoor activity providers to help people plan their weekends in the Lakes.

The glossy, 50-page publication is produced in conjunction with a CTB website: http://www.lakedistrictoutdoors.co.uk
