The CTC argues that the shock tactics employed in road safety campaigns, and media portrayal of ‘stranger danger’, have created a climate of fear that has had a detrimental effect on the number of children walking or cycling to school.
Under the plans, schools will be entitled to spend up to £10,000 on improvements to facilities such as bike sheds, but the CTC believes public re-education is vital if targets for increased cycle use are to be met.
"We have seen the positive results that cycle training has had in equipping both parents and
children with the skills they need to take to the roads with confidence, and for this reason education and promotion will play a critical part in the successful delivery of this Government plan," said
CTC director, Kevin Mayne.
"We are looking forward to working with schools and local authorities involved in this new initiative to implement high quality cycle training."
