Brompton MD William Butler Adams has urged Londoners to embrace travel by bike during and after the current tube strikes.
The Managing Director believes there is a correlation between major travel disruptions, such as in the run up to the Olympics, and an increase in cycling as a form of transport. A cyclist himself, he advised any commuters confused about how to get to work while the strike is on to get on a bike, be it their own or one hired from Brompton or TFL:
“There is no denying that industrial action on public transport, whether you are for or against it, causes a lot of disruption, but what we’re saying is that if you want to be sure of your journey time over the next few days – get on a bike," said the Brompton boss.
"If you haven’t commuted on a bike before, it just takes a little bit of planning; find the routes through the parks and the backstreets and the whole experience is so much more fun. London has become a joy to cycle around in the last few years but there are so many people stuck in the rut of going underground and being squeezed in like sardines when they could be out there, enjoying the fresh air and getting some exercise to boot.”
Both Brompton Bicycle and the sister company, Brompton Dock (a public hire scheme for Bromptons) are expecting an increase in sales and hires around the capital over the next few days. The company is advising all of its 200 strong work force to cycle to work, if they don’t already, to avoid the anticipated disruption.
