Iconic store could be demoilshed to make way for flats

Brixton Cycles may be moved on by planning application

Brixton Cycles is set to be moved on, with the landlord of the iconic shop having submitted plans to build flats on the site.

Neighbouring the recently protected Brixton Beaches skate park, the store has been a vital part of the local cycling community since 1983, when the business was set up as a coorperative. It has been at its current Stockwell Road location since 2001.

Under the proposed plans for redevelopment, prices for a one-bedroom will start at around £400,000. Half a million will buy you a two-bed.

The store posted on its Facebook page:

"Our housing is up in the air, and we don’t want to hit the road just yet. Any legalistas or property gurus out there in Facebookland? We need some legal help and advice from someone in the family. For love and money please get in touch… here, the shop, or sales@brixtoncycles.co.uk

Thank you everyone so much for your support, we just want to clarify that we are not getting evicted – however our building is being knocked down.

This means we may have to embark on a process that involves us moving shops twice over the next 2-3 years. The cost of this is a real threat to our survival.

We are doing everything we can to remain an integral part of the Brixton community. We will also try our hardest to keep everyone up to date with how the situation evolves."
