British Cycling has been shortlisted in the Sport Governing Body of the Year category at the 2012 Sport Industry Awards.
The organisation is one of six governing bodies that have been shortlisted. The Sports Industry Awards, sponsored by the Daily Telegraph, will take place in London on May 2nd.
“I’m delighted to hear that British Cycling has been recognised as one of the top performing sports governing bodies," enthused British Cycling chief executive Ian Drake. "The journey we’ve made over the past four years in particular has been monumental, and the past 12 months is no exception.
“Membership is at an all time high, participation is growing with over 1.7 million people now cycling at least once a week, and we’ve taken important issues right to the heart of government, including championing road safety.
“It’s also been a fantastic year for our elite riders across all disciplines. From Danny Hart’s epic ride to win the World MTB Downhill Championships to our multi-medal success at both the Road World Championships and Para-Cycling Track World Championships, British riders continue to deliver when it matters most.
“To add this award to our roll call of successes would be absolutely phenomenal and is testament to the hard work of everyone involved in cycling, particularly the army of volunteers at a regional and club level without whom our sport wouldn’t function.”
British Cycling, along with its principal partner BSkyB, has also been shortlisted for the Community Programme Award in recognition of its Sky Ride 2011 initiative. Last year, over 200,000 people took part in Sky Ride events across the UK.
