Nicole Cooke of Wales has won the Giro Donne, the female equivalent of the Giro d'Italia. With no Tour Feminine this year, the women's equivalent of the Tour de France, Cooke's victory is especially significant.

Brit rider wins a Grand Tour

"She completed victory finishing safely in a bunch sprint on the final circuits in Milan, before being crowned the champion of the biggest stage race on the 2004 calendar," said Cooke’s official website, nicolecooke.com.

"It’s a remarkable success less than two months since knee surgery, and in only her second race of the year."

Cooke rides for Safi-Pasta Zara-Manhattan team.

The Giro Donne was part of her build up to the Olympics in August, and was "not a specific objective," said nicolecooke.com.
