Social enterprise Bikeworks has opened its second retail shop in Hammersmith and Fulham.
Located at 136 Shepherds Bush Road W6, the retail premises opened its doors last week and will support the work of the organisation across London.
The 100 square metre shop is spread over two floors and will offer maintenance repairs, recycled bicycles and parts, new bicycles, parts and accessories. It will also offer a live training space for trainees undergoing Bikeworks’ three-months cycle in to work employment program.
Bikeworks said that it sees the business model of retail as the only way to offer a sustainable backbone to a growing enterprise in a growth sector.
It said: "Bikeworks prides itself on being able to offer a full repair service with a minimum delay in booking your bike in for repair. Taking its model from East London, Bikeworks is offering up to 16 slots for public repair a day, something many other bike shop struggle to offer. As well as this selling quality new and reused cycles spare and accessories.
"Part of Bikeworks’ triple bottom line and environmental aim is to divert as much metal away from land fill. This results in the region of 2,000 bicycles a year either being recycled or broken down into their component parts for re-use. Members of public are able to come into Bikeworks and have re-used parts put onto their bike during a repair, as well buy fully guaranteed recycled bicycles everyday of the week.
"Bikeworks delivers a very successful cycle based employment training program called Cycle into Work and already uses its shop in Bethnal Green to train customer service elements to its trainees. Some are then employed with Bikeworks and others go off into the cycle industry in London.
"The three-month program has seen a 50 per cent success rate in returning long unemployed back into work. The new shop will offer increased training opportunities which will see more people re-entering the labour market."
