Bike trade invited to take part in new Cyclothon race

Celebrity sports team are currently being assembled for a charity cycle race taking place in September.

Cyclothon UK is a new endurance team relay road cycle race at Brands Hatch, Kent on Thursday September 15th.

The race will feature competing teams from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Confirmed entrants so far include: JPR Williams (Team Dragons); Craig Chalmers, Doddie Weir and David Hilton (Team Jocks); Rory Underwood, Phil De Glanville, Nigel Redman, Ben Sturnham, Mark Regan, Paul Rendall and Victor Ubogu (Team Bulldogs). There are four guest slots open to companies or individuals who want to ride with the teams.

Ex-Bath rugby and England star Ubogu founded the race organiser VU LTD.

He said: “Cyclothon UK is already gaining a lot of support from businesses and individuals. As well as helping a range of our own chosen charities, the event presents a great opportunity for teams to raise funds for their own charities should they choose to do so, or simply to challenge themselves.”

Cyclists taking part will ride the 2.3 mile Grand Prix circuit, with fun or competitive races of either eight or twelve hours on offer.

Video games giant Nintendo, national retailer Furniture Village and cycle firm Rose Bikes have already pledged sponsorship support for the fledgling event. Charities benefiting will include AfriKids, Anthony Nolan, Nordoff Robbins and Wooden Spoon.

“Cyclothon UK will be a tough challenge for riders but we are expecting the cycling community to come on board with teams from the nation’s cycle clubs and even from commuter groups entering. We are working hard to make sure that the cycling community is aware of the event and anticipate that we will reach our target of 50 teams sooner rather than later.”

Entry costs £250 plus VAT. Teams get half a pit garage, medical support, free massafe, mechanical support, timing equipment and much more. A buffet dinner and awards ceremnony fllows the 7:30pm race finish.
