In the first three days of The Big Pedal a whopping 95,134 journeys to school have been made by bicycle.
Running for three weeks this month, Sustrans and Bike Hub-backed The Big Pedal is designed to encourage children, parents and teachers to take to their bikes, with daily prizes up for grabs. In the 1950s, 100,000 UK children were cycle trained, at a time where nearly 44 per cent of the total number of miles travelled by bike and car were made by bike.
Today just over one per cent of the 252 billion miles covered (by bikes and cars) are travelled by bike. The Big Pedal initiative, running in Bike It and non-Bike It schools across the land, is part of a strategy to tackle that trend.
