Could a UK cycling demonstration town play host to cycling conference?

Bids for 2014 Velo City welcomed by European Cyclists’ Federation

The European Cyclists’ Federation is now welcoming bids for the 2014 conference.

It was recently announced that Spanish city Seville was to host the 2011 conference. It is thought the main reasons for the European city’s bid win were inspired by the success of the SEVici bicycle hire scheme, as well as the massive overhaul of infrastructure to better accommodate cycling alongside other means of transport.

With London’s cycle hire scheme now recording massive numbers and rumours of expansion circulating, the Capital could play host, though bids are welcomed from any location with a legitimate claim to have transformed its population from car users to cyclists.

The objectives of playing host to Velo City are listed as:

− Spread high quality knowledge, good new information about cycling, and transport planning at international level.

− Cities with good cycling policies to showcase the benefits they provide to their citizens, businesses and others through the conference generated publicity.

− Encourage the recognition of cycling as an efficient, healthy, environmentally friendly mode of transport and promote its greater use.

− Integrate cycle planning into transport, land-use planning and other relevant policy sectors where cycling plays an important role.

− Seek involvement from all relevant stakeholders.

Application forms can be downloaded and submitted here. Those looking to bid are encouraged to involve local tourist bureaus in their application.
