Beryl reveals details of bike-share scheme

Beryl, the British urban cycling brand that has agreed a five-year bike-share partnership with Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole council, has announced further details regarding its bike-share scheme due to launch this summer.

The roll-out will begin with 50 bikes and the fleet will increase to 1,000 as the summer progresses. Residents will be able to hire a Beryl bike through its app, then ride it anywhere in the operating zone for 5p per minute. Riders have a payment choice of pay-as-you-ride (£1 unlock fee), minute bundles (no unlock fee) or a 24 hour day pass for £12. Beryl has said it does not require riders to pay a deposit before use.

The three-speed gear bike can be picked up and dropped off in marked out ‘Beryl Bays’. The Beryl Bays have been selected and approved in conjunction with the council, and the team at Beryl will be giving members of the public an opportunity to nominate streets for a Beryl Bay, to ensure the scheme is expanded in line with the ‘needs of the community’.

To access a bike, riders can download the Beryl app and use it to unlock their nearest bike. Once their ride is complete, users close the lock on the bike to complete their ride and make it available for the next person to use. The app also provides users with a guide on how to lock and unlock the bike, and where to park them.

The Beryl bikes are also fitted with the company’s patented Laserlight technology. Through the custom-built reporting dashboard, Beryl will be able to provide the council with insights from the data generated by the bikes.
