Customers buying a new Marin, Whyte, Wilier or Mezzo bike will be given three months of £1m public liability insurance.

ATB Sales offers insurance package

The service is called Platinum Care by ATB Sales.

CTC and British Cycling offer their members third-party insurance but even though both orgs have experienced a boom in membership, not every enthusiast cyclist is a member of either of these bodies.

The boom in cycling, both on and off-road, has led to a corresponding rise in claims against cyclists. Damage to third party property or injury to a third party can result in an individual being sued.

Platinum Care offer also includes personal injury cover for up to £10,000 for three months. Those eligible to take up the offer can register online at the shop where they buy the bike, or later at home.

Two additional benefits are the option to take out a cycle insurance policy to guard against theft and accidental damage and a discounted security package in the shape of an electronic transponder, the Immobitag. ATB Sales used to fit these tags as standard on all their bikes but not every customer registered their number, leading to a lot of false trails for police.

Taking out Platinum Care also provides users with entry on Immobilise.com, a global property registration website recognised by the UK government, police and worldwide law enforcement agencies such as the FBI.

Ross Patterson of ATB Sales, said: “We put a great deal of effort into making our bikes stand out as a high end, quality product and that’s what we have done with this after sales package too.

“We asked ourselves what we would want to get from an after sales agreement.

Platinum Care is a service provided by JLT|Online, formerly known as Pavilion Insurance. JLT|Online is a division of Jardine Lloyd Thompson UK. The company’s existing insurance product is Cycleguard.

Platinum Care members get three months FOC and can then choose to continue with the service for a fee.
