American bicycle imports hit record value in 2010

Bicycle Retailer and Industry News reports that the USA has imported $1.43 billion worth of bicycles in 2010, a record value.

19.77 million bikes came into the country last year, though this falls behind the year 2000, in which a record 20.28 million units were shipped in – perhaps suggesting that the average value of imports has risen over the years. 2009’s shipments were worth $1.12 billion.

Shipments from Taiwan were three per cent below 2009 levels in the third quarter, however, fourth quarter imports were so high that the year’s business with the USA ended 12 per cent up on 2009 levels.

Chinese imports accounted for 95 per cent of imports in 2010 and shipments from China rose 35 per cent year-on-year.
