Thanks to a deal with Sports R Us, Amazon.com sells budget bikes but the online behemoth is extending its reach into the more expensive part of the market by selling Delta Corporation's iXi, a bike Delta's MD likens to an iPod. Prior to the availability on Amazon, Errol Drew had said his bike would be sold in exclusive non-bike retailers such as the Conran Shop in London.

Amazon.com goes upmarket with $1289 bike

In 2002, Delta MD Errol Drew told Bicycle Retailer magazine he had no interest in selling complete bicycles:

"The industry is too focused on numbers and less focused on quality. The emphasis here [in the US] is on quantity over quality. As an industry, we should concentrate on quality and value and less on numbers."

Talking of the availability of iXi bikes on Amazon.com, a company press statement said "the iXi Bike has been heralded as the future of self propelled transport.

“This bike is targeted to appeal to those who might not normally consider biking an option so selling through the powerful channel of Amazon is a logical step for the iXi,” said Jeff Greenstein, director of sales and marketing at Delta Cycle Corporation.
