Grade II-listed pedestrian and cyclist tunnels improvements move closer to getting the green light

£6m Tyne tunnel upgrade approved by Transport Authority

The Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority has approved the £6 million refurbishment of Tyne’s pedestrian and cyclist tunnels.

The upgrade, approved by the Transport Authority on Thursday (July 24th), has still to be given the go-ahead by North Tyneside and South Tyneside Councils, but is set to affect linking Howdon and Jarrow.

Chairman of the Transport Authority, councillor David Wood, said: “It is pleasing to approve this investment in these times of financial constraint.

"The refurbishment will ultimately be paid for by tolls raised at the vehicle tunnel so there is no cost to the council taxpayer.”
