Should the industry lobby the EC for legislation changes, asks ETRA?

30+ companies registered for Eurobike e-bike meet

Over 30 companies have so far signed up to the ETRA organised Eurobike meet, organised with the intention to discuss legislation changes relating to e-bikes.

The association, which frequently lobbies the European Commission to take note of all things two-wheel, is seeking industry feedback on:

1) Are the 250 W and 25 km/h limitations the most appropriate specifications for excluding vehicles from the type-approval procedure, thus classifying them as bicycles?

2) Is the type-approval procedure for mopeds and motorcycles the most appropriate homologation procedure for electric bikes not excluded from type-approval?

According to ETRA:

"The European institutions have promulgated the type-approval law in 2002, without however properly consulting the electric bike industry on the most appropriate legal framework for their vehicles. On September 5th, the European Twowheel Retailers’ Association (ETRA), in cooperation with the Light Electric Vehicle Associaton (LEVA), is organising a meeting for the electric bike industry at Eurobike in Friedrichshafen. The meeting, which will take place from 9am till no later than midday in the Berlin room, Entrance East, 1st Floor, is to decide whether the industry wants to lobby the European Commission for a review of the current legislation."

Among those currently due to attend the meet are Biketec, Cannondale, Currie, Dahon, Fallbrook, Heinzmann, OHM Cycles, Phylion, Riese & Müller, Sanyo, SRAM, Trek, Ultra Motor and Whisper bikes.

All companies involved in the electric bike business are encouraged to to register interest in attending to meet.
