Sustrans encourages ladies to get cycling in glamorous gear and bling their bikes

‘Cycling can be beautiful’

Edinburgh will see a one-off event on Sunday May 31 as part of Sustrans’ drive to get women on bikes.

The event has been designed to encourage style-conscious cyclists join in a ride that begins at Haymarket Yards, next to Haymarket Rail Station at 12.00pm. The ride will cover some of the National Cycle Network routes north of the city over one and a half hours.

Prizes will be awarded for the most glamorous riders and for a ‘Bling your Bike’ competition.

Sustrans events officer in Scotland Gina Alcock said: “We’re really keen to show that whether by wearing heels, your favourite skirt or by putting flowers in your hair, cycling can be beautiful.

“Many of us girls tend to worry that by pedalling to work, to the shops or to see friends we’ll arrive in a mess, but that’s hardly ever the case. Cycling is one of the easiest ways to get fit and feel good – and there is no need to compensate on style.”

The event isn’t exclusively for women though, as men are also invited to join in.

Women in cycling is proving to be a hot topic for the trade. You can read some industry opinions on the subject here.
